Both parties benefit from a healthy interaction between the city and the surrounding area: Rural areas need to be connected to the centres in order to meet the diverse needs of the population. Whether it is access to the labour market and retail trade, medical care, cultural offerings - rural areas are losing importance in these areas. At the same time, an increasing migration of rural residents to the centres promises increasing pressure on cities: rents are rising, as is the demand for public services.

The main aim of the project is to create mutual awareness. At the same time, a rethinking of (administrative) structures is needed - less locally, more regionally.

Over two years, four Austrian pilot regions are working on improving cooperation between the city and the surrounding area.

Possible fields of action:

  • Mobility
  • (Affordable) living space
  • Cooperation in services of general interest/public services
  • Shared cultural life/tourism
  • Labor market
